âItâs gone, Grandpa,â I wept. âDead. Here one day, and poof! Gone the next. Far away from its home and family. Poor, poor fish.â A little hiccup escaped my throat. âI didnât even get to say goodbye.â
âIâm sorry, Minnow. I know it meant a lot to you. But donât you think youâre being a tad melodramatic?â
âI am not being dramatic,â I sobbed. âYou donât understand, Grandpa. I discovered a brand new species of fish, and just days later, itâs all over. How do you expect me to feel? I should have kept it in the bathtub and taken care of it myself, but I abandoned it to an institution and now itâs dead and gone. An innocent life over, and Iâm responsible.â
Grandpa cleared his throat. âHmm. Youâre right, Minnow. Youâre not being even the least bit dramatic.â
âThe truth is, everything I touch is doomed. Today I tossed Momâs phone to the bottom of the lake. Now I have to do the whole familyâs laundry all summer to earn enough to pay for it. Even Dadâs boxer shorts. If you love me, Grandpa, youâll send Mom a new iPhone to relieve me of this torture.â
âNot a chance,â he said, but with kindness in his voice.
âItâs okay, I forgive you.â I wiped my nose on my shirt sleeve, and felt a little better having gotten it off my chest.
âThere is one good thing, though. Today we found a volcanic fault and hot spring under Glacial Lake. Dad said to tell you that the warm mineral water is great for old, achy, weary bones.â
âOh, did he now?â said Grandpa. âThen tell him he should go for a swim.â
âOkay, Iâll give him the message.â I held back a laugh, since I wasnât quite ready to give up my bad mood.
âWell, goodnight, Grandpa.â
âGoodnight, Minnow.â
