We must remember to make the necessary satisfaction for past sins and firmly resolve to avoid in future the dangerous occasions of sin which have been the cause of our fall.
SATISFACTION consists in the cutting off of the causes of the sin. Thus, fasting is the proper antidote to lust; prayer to pride, to envy, anger and sloth; alms to covetousness. â St Richard of Chichester (d. 1253).
IT is necessary, too, that we shun the occasions which have been the cause of our sin. We must have recourse to fervent prayer, receive frequently and worthily the sacraments. He who does this will be sure to persevere. â St John Vianney (1786-1859).
OF all the counsels of Christ, one of the greatest, and so to say, the foundation of religion, is to fly the occasions of sin. â St Bernardine of Siena (1380-1444).
HE who walks along a precipice, although he may not fall over, yet he trembles and often falls through that very fear. Even so, he who flies not far from sin, but keeps near to it, lives in continual fear, and often falls. â St John Chrysostom (347-407).
THAT hope is deceitful which hopes to be saved amidst the occasions of sin. â St Augustine (354-430).
YOU ought to make every effort to free yourselves even from venial sin, and to do what is most perfect. â St Teresa of Avila (1515-82).
BE assured that he who shall always walk faithfully in God's presence, always ready to give Him an account of all his actions, shall never be separated from Him by consenting to sin. â St Thomas Aquinas (1225-74).
