Family name: Armadillidiidae (pillbugs), Oniscidae (sowbugs)

Latin name: Armadillidium vulgare (pillbugs); Porcellio scaber, P. laevis, Oniscus asellus (sowbugs)

Pillbugs

LIFE CYCLE

The females deposit up to 200 eggs in a special pouch (aptly named the “marsupium”). Juveniles hatch in a month but remain in the pouch, where they feed on a special fluid. After a couple of weeks, they leave the pouch and go through several molts. It takes the young about a year to reach maturity. Because moisture is crucial to their existence, a large percentage of the young don’t survive. Females can produce up to three broods per year. Pillbugs and sowbugs live from 2 to 5 years.
