If I thought sleep was difficult before, it was damn near impossible today. After the night I’d had—first being tempted to bite Benny, then watching him puke up blood like a tuberculosis victim—my mind was frayed, to say the least. And the worst part was that I was in my bed alone for the first time since I became a vampire. Haley was in her own room next door and Nicholae was away. Even if I was petrified that I would be urged to bite Nicholae too, I needed his comfort.

But Nicholae was stuck at Laramie’s for the day. He had sure acted strange on the phone. He hung up on me when I told him about Benny throwing up, then when he called back, all he said was, “I’ll see you a couple hours past nightfall tomorrow. In the meantime, don’t get too close to Benny.” I could hear in his voice that something was wrong, and if it was big enough for him not to tell me, it must be really bad. Had he and Laramie discovered what killed that anonymous vampire?

And his last comment was odd, about not getting close to Benny. Could he know about my irrational urges to bite other vampires? Had he seen right through my excuses the other night in the shower, and just kept it to himself? Was he afraid of me? Oh no, that would be horrible! I can’t lose Nicholae. I have to get myself together!

But wait, Crimson, you don’t know that’s why he said that. It could be something else. Was he maybe afraid Benny was somehow competition? That because he wasn’t here I would succumb to Benny’s charm or something? Well, that’s just ridiculous. Nicholae had to know that my loyalty to him was unbreakable. At least, I hoped he did.

Ugh, I just wish he was here already!

I looked at the wall clock. Only 7:17 AM. I sighed. This was going to be the longest day of my life.

Then I remembered the sleeping pills Haley had gone to town for. I pulled open the top drawer of my nightstand and found the bottle at the back under a pile of panties. Out of human habit, I read the directions on the label.

“Take ONE every 24 hours before bed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.”

Then I remembered those rules don’t apply to vampires. I popped open the top and poured half the bottle into my mouth, chewing them up to make them easier to swallow dry. I hated the taste, and I had no idea if my body would accept them or not. I hadn’t experimented with ingesting anything but blood since I turned—why the hell would I when all food smelled disgusting?

Once I had them all down, I returned the bottle to its spot in the drawer and lay back on the bed, trying to clear my head and relax.

Apparently, it must have worked, because the sound of Haley’s voice accompanied by gentle knocking on the door made me shoot up in bed, and when I looked at the clock, it now read 1:53.
