Organizations like this are part of the problem because they foster secrecy and the underlying goal appears to be taking credit as the first group to prove the existence of Bigfoot.3 What is wrong with conducting independent research? What is the big deal about sharing and discussing your research with others? If Bigfoot investigation groups want to be taken seriously in the eyes of the public and credible scientists, they could begin by being more open and transparent. Just imagine what would happen if most scientists conducted their research like this. We would still be living in the dark ages.

Even when sympathetic mainstream scientists try to get involved to lend more credibility to the field, human nature rears its ugly head. The events of May 1978 are a case in point. That is when the University of British Columbia (UBC) agreed to host a Bigfoot conference. What transpired is a testament to why scientists are hesitant to embrace cryptozoology as a full-fledged discipline. For anyone familiar with the field, the outcome was as predictably absurd as it was comical. As Bigfoot researcher Rene Dahinden appeared before a scrum of reporters, journalist Richard Louv recorded what happened next:
