CHAPTER

The euphoric bliss of breaking the flesh at Gunnar’s throat had no comparison. The rightness of feeding from his vein left Chelle shaken. Power crested within her with every deep pull of suction. The tether that connected them grew taut as their bond was further strengthened. That she’d given in to her desire to take his vein didn’t diminish her fear. Instead, it intensified. Rather than put distance between them, she’d only managed to get closer. She wanted to push him away, but like the tides were drawn to the moon, she was helpless to resist his pull.

His blood was as sweet as she’d imagined it would be. A delicious nectar she couldn’t get enough of. Gunnar’s hands gripped her hips, his fingers digging into her flesh as she continued to drink. He trusted her. Wasn’t afraid. Had faith in the tether that bound them. Gunnar knew that Chelle wouldn’t hurt him.

And finally, Chelle realized it, too.

Her thirst was under control. It had been since she’d met him. It was the fact that she hadn’t fed from anyone but Lucas that prompted her to believe otherwise. She’d assumed Lucas was strong enough to support her raging need for blood, but the truth was, Chelle had leveled out and she hadn’t even realized it. Too preoccupied with all of her other oddities, she’d failed to acknowledge the change. That didn’t mean her abilities were any more in check, but maybe this was a start.

“You’re warm.” Gunnar’s tone was filled with awe.

The crisp hair of his chest grazed her nipples, causing them to harden. His erection brushed against her hip, the skin like marble encased in satin. He let out a contented growl that vibrated through Chelle and settled in a low thrum between her legs. Her tongue flicked out to seal the punctures in his throat and she pulled away, unsteady on her feet.

Concern marred Gunnar’s rugged features. “Are you all right?”

“Yeah,” she said with a laugh. “Just a little buzzed. Your blood. It’s … wow.”

The warmth of Gunnar’s chuckle caused her stomach to clench. He bent his head low to kiss her throat down to her bare shoulder. “That good?”

Chelle shivered. “You have no idea.”

Gunnar’s mouth met hers in a searing kiss. Their physical attraction and compatibility couldn’t be denied. They were combustible. Fire and gasoline. Even if that was all they’d ever have. Even if they never felt an emotional connection. Even if the complexities of their lives divided them, Chelle knew they would come together again and again to satisfy this need that burned within them. Heat pooled in her limbs, her heart hammered in her rib cage.

“Gods, Chelle. You’re like the moon to me. A power that calls to me. Holds sway over me. Commands me.”

His words sent a thrill through her bloodstream. No male had ever said such wonderful things to her. Always chasing treasures, always in search of something more, Chelle had never given herself over to romantic entanglements. Her affairs were nothing more than brief flashes of moments.
