You might prefer to use an ‘All about me’ sheet, with prompts asking questions about various different areas of the learners’ lives. This could include their interests, their family background, their favourite subjects, their areas of strength and weakness, and so on. You can find some nicely illustrated examples for doing this task online. Younger children could fill out an ‘All about me’ sheet with the help of parents, or parents could fill it out for them, when they start at your setting.

As well as it being useful to create a learner profile at the start of the school year, you can also use it as a useful pre-transition activity. The learners could be asked to write to someone at their next setting, for instance their new head teacher, about their hopes, expectations and aspirations for their new school. For these to prove useful, you will need to make time to read and respond to them – giving learners a sense of agency and ownership in their learning is only helpful when they feel that you actually listen to what they say.
