ORIGINAL MOVIES VS. PREQUELS

Out of the 22 Ultimate Collector’s Series LEGO sets created, only four were based on the prequel trilogy:

10018 UCS Darth Maul

10026 UCS Special Edition Naboo Starfighter

10186 UCS General Grievous

10215 UCS Obi Wan’s Jedi Starfighter

With two sets, the 7194 UCS Yoda and the 10225 UCS R2-D2, being based on characters from all six movies. Why such a huge difference? Simply put, Star Wars fans held the original trilogy films with higher regard than the prequels, and it would appear that the original movies had a greater influence on LEGO designers, thus creating the substantial difference in the amount of UCS sets produced for either trilogy. Another indication of the increased interest in the original films and their related LEGO sets comes from the fact that these sets, as a whole, perform better on the LEGO secondary market than the prequel sets do.

LEGO sales and set popularity on the secondary market often mimics those of the primary LEGO retail market. If a particular LEGO set sells well on the secondary market, it probably sold well in the LEGO brick and mortar stores of the world before it was retired. It would make sense that The LEGO Group designs and produces sets that fans want, not ones that will collect dust on the shelves. I guess this explains why LEGO is constantly reissuing X-Wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and Millennium Falcons ...They sell well!
