embraced the 140-character limit in order to help spread the faith. In the few weeks between the arrival of @Pontifex—“bridge builder” in Latin—and the end of his papacy, Benedict sent 39 Tweets. In the process, he amassed more than 3 million followers on his 8 language accounts, including Arabic.
Benedict’s Tweets aren’t particularly memorable, given that the Vatican was still figuring out how best to use the social media platform. But that he used the platform at all remains revolutionary. He embraced a new method of communication, and in the process he raised the bar for what’s expected of Church leaders. People no longer want whitewashed messages delivered through prepared statements. They want to hear directly from celebrities, politicians, activists, and now popes. Benedict obliged. But on February 28, 2013, Benedict sent his final message:
