Was Jesus a Legend?

As our initial review showed, many people feel more comfortable with a Jesus who can be placed in some well-defined category. But readers of the Gospels disagree over where to place him. Was he a Jewish rabbi? A cynical Greek sage? A teacher? Demon? Samaritan? Revolutionary? Or perhaps-the list grows-aphorist, prophet, bodhisattva, yogi, sadhu, feminist, apocalyptic fanatic, faith healer, storyteller, or Messiah? Strangely, a case can be made from first-century records for most of these hypotheses! Some overlap, but others contradict one another.

Perhaps the Vatican should invite proponents of all these theories to a party to say thanks. You can't make a living, breathing elephant from the parts described by the blind men. But you can begin to realize how extraordinary the creature really is.
