John and a shaken Amy crossed the street and walked along the sidewalk. People shoved by, darting in and out of stores and restaurants. John glanced at Amy but remained quiet. After a long tortuous silence, Amy finally turned to him.
âWhat happened to that woman? ...Did they make a mistake? Was she not really dead?â
John gently smiled. âThatâs closer to the truth than you know.â
Amy stopped. âWhat happened? What did you do?â
He stopped and studied her. âI called her back.â
âYou called her back? How did you...? What does that mean? You called her back?â
John was silent.
âDo you have a right to do that? What if it was her time to go? What if she was better off where she was?â
âI wanted her back. I called her back. Itâs my movie. I can do whatever I want.â
Amy reeled. âWhoa. Your movie? I thought you said it was my movie?â
âThatâs right. I did.â
âWell, how can it be both your movie and mine?â
âThere are an infinite number of movies.â He continued walking.
Amy whispered, âDad forgive me.â She hurried to catch up with John. âI would sell my soul to save my father.â
A look of compassion crossed Johnâs face. He stopped in front of a store with televisions on display in the window. Each set was on a different show. He pointed to one.
âLook. Thatâs one of your favorite actors, right?â
âA woman comes back from the dead, and you want to watch TV?â Amy had no time for this, not even to ask why he knew that.
They watched a few moments as the actor died in the movie. Silence. John looked at Amy with question in his eyes. Then he pointed to another set.
âWait! There he is again! But I just watched him die. How did he do that?â
Amy stared in disbelief. âYouâre not serious, right?â
John stared at her.
Amy was dumbfounded. âTheyâre just movies. Heâs acting. He didnât really die. ...You know that, right?â
âYes, I do. Do you?â
âWhat are you telling me? That people donât really die? That itâs all pretend like in the movies?â
He smiled.
âButâ¦why do we go through all the pain and suffering of death if it isnât real?â she asked.
âBecause you believe itâs real...and that itâs inevitable.â
âItâs not?â
âDeathâs not a real thing. Itâs an illusion. Like everything else.â His voice was strong and passionate.
Amy looked bewildered. She wanted to understand. And she desperately wanted to believe him. But nothing in her life had prepared her for this.
John focused on her. âYour spiritual teachers have told you that youâre eternal, right? When do you think eternal life begins? After you die? Eternal life has no beginning...and no end. Eternal is now and always.â
He saw that Amy was still struggling. âYouâve just done the death scenes so many times, youâve forgotten you donât have to end your movies that way.â
They continued walking in silence.
Amy suddenly turned to him, her eyes flashing. âA friend died two years ago. If death isnât real, where is she?â
âSheâs still around you...watching in the wings, so to speak. You just donât believe you can see her because you believe she isnât physical.
