The rest of Thursday afternoon, Emma thought about what her brother had said. And she was still thinking about it when Travis called it quits and headed out, promising to be back the next day to finish putting together the tiered wooden stands.

Maybe he was right. Perhaps they were all moving too fast, building a temporary family that would eventually dissolve once her career and Tom’s life had them going different ways again.

Should they take a step back before the kids’ expectations were raised even higher?

Unfortunately, she had already told the boys she and Buttercup would have dinner with them that evening. So, she arranged to meet in the town park for a picnic dinner that she happily provided. The kids played on the playground afterward while Buttercup watched the shenanigans, and she and Tom sat on a bench and talked about the financial prospectus that he was putting together for her.

Because she wasn’t going out to the Rocking R that night, she had brought a couple of her nieces’ and nephews’ favorite stories and read them to Austin, Crockett and Bowie before they left Laramie.

The boys weren’t overjoyed she wasn’t going home with them. But they did love the books about trucks, dinosaurs and a lost bunny, and Tom promised them cookies and milk before bed if they were good listeners, so there wasn’t too much complaining as their dad put them in his Silverado quad cab.

He paused before getting in himself. “Thanks for tonight,” he said.

She smiled. “You’re welcome.”

“Breakfast tomorrow?”

This was all getting dangerously tempting. “Probably not a good idea, since Travis will be at my place bright and early.”

Although she hadn’t told Tom about the warning from her brother, he knew her well enough to sense something was up. “How’s the installation going?” he asked casually thereby opening the door for anything else she chose to tell him.

“The shelves are up, but he still has to assemble all the tiered shoe display stands, which he estimates will take most of tomorrow.”

“Does he need help?”

She waved off his offer of assistance and backed up, signaling it was time for him to go. She smiled, and peering into the passenger compartment gave the boys, who were watching them intently, another merry wave adieu.

They waved excitedly in return.

She turned back to Tom, doing her best to keep it casual. “Thanks, but there’s nothing I can’t do.”
