Jackson had been right. Once they made their way from the complex underground fortress, they found themselves on a parapet carved into the side of the mountain. From their elevation, they could see out over the Northern California forests for miles – all the way to Kennit in the far distance. It was mid-afternoon, and the sun was shining brightly. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky; a deceptively gorgeous day following the hell they’d gone through the previous night.

Jackson led her past several of Caleb’s burly guards, all of whom eyed them curiously as they made their way to the very edge of the parapet – where a single sheet of stone separated them from a thousand foot drop.

As if sensing her apprehension, Jackson took her hand in his, enveloping it in the customary warmth of his kind. When Ava met his unsure gaze, part of her wanted to comfort him – to tell him that she was all right and he had nothing to be ashamed of. What had happened to her wasn’t his fault. But first, she needed him to speak with her – frankly – and to divulge his secrets.

Like what on earth he meant about his brother.

“Ava, I’m so sorry. I should have told you sooner, but everything snowballed, and now…now she’s back. If I had known…”

“Slow down, Jackson.” Ava spoke softly, squeezing his hand in reassurance. “Just start from the beginning. I’m listening.”

And she was.

Ava didn’t say a word as Jackson revealed to her the story of how he’d been exiled from his pack – he’d been in line to be Alpha and had the right stolen from him by his power-hungry brother.

Samantha had driven the insecurities that had unseated Jackson, scarred him, and torn him away from everything he’d known.

“I’m sorry for what I did, Ava. At Selina’s.” The young woman now found it hard to breathe when she met those pained amber eyes of his. “I know it’s no excuse…but if you could even begin to fathom how alone I’ve been…for so long. I can’t speak to my sisters. Can’t interact with the people I grew up with…and worst of all, to know my own brother would take my life if he could, just so prevent some perceived threat to his power…”

He shook his head slowly, a shudder passing through his taut form. “Ava…I would have given it to him.” Leaning against the stone rampart that separated them from certain death, Jackson released her hand to gaze out over the forest far below them. “All he needed to do was ask. I would have given it all over…the title, the power…I never wanted to be Alpha. I never wanted all of…this.” He swept out his arm behind him, indicating Caleb’s stone fortress and all it contained. “But he took it. He betrayed me in the worst of ways…and he let her ruin our pack. Who knows what she’s done to my friends…my family…”

His pain was fairly palpable.
