The fourth idolatrous scene takes place right at the porch (or portico) of the entrance to the temple itself (8:16). Between the bronze altar and the porch holding the two giant bronze pillars, Ezekiel sees twenty-five men with their backs to the temple (where the presence of God is), bowing down to worship the sun-god Shamash. This is doubly insulting to God. Turning one’s back to a monarch right in his own palace is an extremely disrespectful and insulting action. Thus being in the temple and turning one’s back to the presence of God in the most holy place is an insult to the honor of God. Likewise worshiping the pagan sun-god right at the main entrance to God’s temple is an unimaginable affront to God and as serious a violation of the first of the Ten Commandments as is possible.
