In our opinion, one of the most important elements of the whole church is the first the visitor sees on entering it. The recently vandalized demon in the doorway has always been called ‘Asmodeus’, he who traditionally guards buried treasure—although there is nothing to link this statue explicitly with the devil of that name. But we discussed this with Robert Howells, who, as manager of one of London’s most famous occult bookshops, has an extraordinarily extensive knowledge of esoteric symbolism, and whose own researches into the Rennes-le-Château mystery are scholarly, sane and far-reaching. He pointed out that there is an ancient Jewish legend about the building of the Temple of Solomon in which the king prevented various demons from interfering in the work in a number of different ways—one of them, Asmodeus, was ‘bound’ by making him carry water, the one element that could be used to control him11. Significantly, such legends have been incorporated into Masonic lore, and it is surely no coincidence to find this tableau in Saunière’s church where Asmodeus is being controlled by carrying water—under the words ‘By this sign you will conquer him’. And the decorations of the water stoup—angels, salamanders, water stoup and demon—represent the classic four elements of air, fire, water and earth that are essential to any occult work.
