Chapter 21

Malcolm

I almost felt bad about what I’d done to Crystal, but the truth was, she deserved it. She had been a thorn in my side for quite a long time, and now she was on the brink of ruining my marriage. The messed-up part about it was that I knew her concern had nothing to do with her friendship with Mariah. This was all about her and the fact that she still wanted to be with me.

I wasn’t trying to be cocky or arrogant, but I knew precisely how Crystal felt. Ever since our sophomore year of high school, she’d had a huge crush on me, and it seemed like that crush hadn’t diminished over the years. It was especially evident the night before her twenty-first birthday party. She, Cedric, a few of our other friends, and I had gone out for drinks as a pre-graduation celebration.

I could recall the entire night like it were yesterday as it played in my head. She was all dressed in white and looking as sexy as could be. I remember Cedric being incredibly proud that he had the hottest chick in the bar on his arm. However, all night, I found her watching me from across the room every chance she got. I played things off the best I could . . . one, because she was my best friend’s girlfriend, and more importantly, because she was my best friend’s girlfriend. That just wasn’t how Cedric and I got down, and loyalty meant everything to us.

Toward the end of the night, Cedric had had a little too much to drink and wasn’t sober enough to take her home. So, I ended up driving them both home, with her encouraging me to drop him off first. Against my better judgment, I did just that, and that’s when it happened. She’d told me she wasn’t ready to go home and begged for us to park somewhere near the water and watch the sunrise. I wasn’t all that tired, so I agreed. So, there we were, sitting outside of my car, near the water, listening to music and drinking the last couple of beers I had in the trunk.

Then out of nowhere, her favorite song began to play on the radio. All I could remember was that it was something by New Edition. She began dancing and swaying to the rhythm of the music as I lay back on the blanket, and my eyes watched her body move like some sort of mermaid. I would have been a fool to say I wasn’t turned on, but in the back of my mind was the fact that my best friend had trusted me with his girl. As she danced and swayed some more, the next thing I knew, she’d straddled the bottom portion of my body and began kissing me. I liked it, and to be totally honest, I liked it a lot, but not enough to betray my friend. So, I ended up pushing her off me and telling her to get in the car.
