TIP

Use the @ symbol before a person’s name to indicate the chat message is intended for a specific person. For example @Maria, there is no prerequisite for Advanced PM.

Check Periodically for Chat Posts

When the chat area is unusually active, scroll back through the comments that have scrolled off the visible screen to see if you missed anything. If you are facilitating alone, just pause and tell the audience that you are reviewing the chat text to make sure you didn’t miss any key questions or comments. If you find an important post you missed, address it either verbally or in the chat area. Your careful attention to ensuring your timely response to chat messages encourages greater participant engagement and even more lively chat interaction. If you notice that participants are helping each other in the chat area, take time to acknowledge this positive collaboration.

Say It and Type It for Maximum Clarity

Type any verbally posed questions in the chat area to ensure that participants understand your intention. This dual approach works best when a facilitator and producer work together. For example, the facilitator poses the question while the producer simultaneously types the question into the chat area. Be clear about how you want participants to respond—via chat or verbally. Note that if the participants type their responses, the facilitator should acknowledge and highlight a few good examples.
