March

March is when the gardening season increases in intensity and deadlines loom: Seeds are started indoors, in the cold frame, and outdoors, fruit trees and other edible perennials are planted and pruned, and procrastination for building new garden beds has reached its limit. Yet the crisp, fresh air holds a steady hopefulness and excitement for a bountiful garden season.

Compost soil is added to garden beds in the spring

April

We continue our careful watch over seedlings started inside, while the weather dictates windows of opportunity for sowing and transplanting outside. Glimpses of beautiful green life pops up in the form of garlic stalks, which handle the unpredictable spring weather with fortitude. This is a good month for infrastructure projects such as constructing compost bins or rain catchment systems. Time to put away the cold frame until fall.
