It ended up being closer to an hour.

After inserting the newly made shoe into the trough of cool water, Abner turned his head so he could breathe around the hissing steam. He felt the sweat drip down his face, and he had to blink quickly to keep it out of his eyes, even with the safety glasses. Sweat trickled down his back and chest. While he didn’t wear a shirt, it did soak his apron’s front. The leather of the apron and his jeans stuck to his body.

A dip in a cool tub sounds fantastic.

Abner smiled at the thought as he pulled the horseshoe out and set it on the anvil. Hanging his tools on their hooks on the wall, he put everything away. He lifted the heavy-duty apron over his head and hung it up, too.

Finally, Abner stretched his arms over his head. He flexed his muscles and twisted this way and that. Feeling the satisfying pop of his spine, he heaved a relaxed sigh.

Crossing back to the trough, Abner cupped his hands into the water and splashed it over himself. He did it a few times, soaking his head and torso. After making a mental note to unbraid his hair so it’d dry faster after he’d spoken with Master Jaymes, he grabbed a towel and wiped himself down.

Abner hung up the towel, then grabbed his shirt and hat—plopping the latter on his head—before heading out of the blacksmith lean-to shed. The two-sided structure offered safety to work in, plus only having two sides offered a better chance of a breeze.

Too bad there hadn’t been one that day. After roping off the area, since the fire basin was still full of hot coals, he strode across the lawn toward the main house. He was halfway there before his torso felt dry enough to pull his shirt on over his head. If he’d been in a human community, he would have splashed on cologne, too, but he knew the smell of sweat and musk was far more pleasant to a vampire than artificial scents.

Reaching the house, Abner didn’t bother to knock. He pulled open the front door and headed inside the foyer. Glancing around, he noted Rhyme descending the stairs. The enforcer beckoned to him, and Abner headed his way, knowing they’d been watching for him.

Abner felt a fissure of unease upon seeing the way Rhyme’s brows were furrowed. Again, the thought of Pascal entered his mind. He remembered the way Boyd had tipped his head and scented him.

It didn’t take a leap to figure that Boyd had reported to the vampire leaders about him fucking the pretty shifter.

Damn. Stop thinking about him.

“Hey, Abner,” Rhyme greeted as he led the way upstairs and down the hall. “Thanks for coming. I think we have some good news for you.”

That wasn’t what Abner had expected. “And, yet, you appear awfully worried about something.”

The corner of Rhyme’s lips curved into a wry smile. “Oh, just thinking of something else.” He knocked twice on Master Jaymes’ office door, then waited.
