Death and Last Testament

Death of Mother Mariana

After the death of Mother Francisca on October 4, 1634, and having witnessed the terrible visions of the coming times, Mother Mariana’s health weakened. Her sisters had been present at the death of Mother Francisca, and so were not resigned to the decease of Mother Mariana, whose life was a living sermon for them. She was always even in temperament, always humble of heart, and, without making differentiation of persons, always condescending towards all her daughters in all that did not involve imperfection in their souls. She was foremost in the observance of the Rule and in monastic labors, and the last of them to rest.

Addressing their worries, Mother Mariana said, “When I have ended my mortal life, I will certainly not die … on the contrary, all the foundresses will live here until the end of time, supporting the life of the cloister, watching over the observance of the Rule and always separating the good wheat from the cockle … after purifying the spirits in the twentieth century, we will bring suitable youths for the new foundation …”

Despite her ailments, she continued observing the Rule as if she were a novice, and in the hours of fraternal relaxation of the community, she sang and played her compositions on the harp, the majority of which were dedicated to the Child Jesus, Who was her delight. She dedicated her free time to making mental prayer, to helping in the infirmary by caring for the sick, and to cleaning the convent.

On December twenty-fourth, the ladies of Quito had sent sweets and fruits, and the holy foundress formed with them the Christmas tree. The novices had free time for recreation and Mother Mariana joined them. She put a picture of the Nativity on top of the tree and beneath it, a sign, “Long live the Child Jesus and His religious of the Immaculate Conception in the city of Quito! In a year from today, the only foundress whom you have with you will bless you from Heaven. Farewell, I await you there!” In front of the crib, Mother Mariana played the lap harp and sang to the Child Jesus, interspersing her song with comments and praises of the religious.

On that Christmas Eve, the religious staged a beautiful play composed by Mother Mariana, whose protagonists were the three Archangels. It was so tender and spiritual, that the religious experienced, more than ever, an extraordinary fervor when communicating at midnight.
