Who could have put these ideas into her head? . . . "I dare to hope," wrote Mme. Martin to her sister-in-law, "that perhaps God has His merciful plans for this child. If it required only the sacrifice of my life for her to become a saint, I would make it with all my heart." 14

It was on Saturday, February 24th, 1877, the eighteenth anniversary of her clothing day, in the forty-ninth year of her age, that Sister Marie-Dosithée gently passed away. A supernatural confidence surrounded her to the end. "Oh Mother," she said to her Superior, "I can only love and trust and surrender myself. Help me to thank God for it."

During the preceding night, much moved, she had blessed from afar the two families at Alençon and Lisieux. Three weeks previously, she had written a last letter to her brother and sister, in which she had said, in particular:
