Stepping Stone Paths

A stepping stone path is a casual way to explore a garden, leading from one area to the next. It’s also practical because its narrow scale can fit into plants beds to let you weed and plant. Stepping stone paths are easy to install, but before you start, you should consider the many forms such a path can take.

Stepping stones appear in various shapes in gardens. Some are natural while others are worked to form shapes like rectangles and circles. The stones may be set about 4" apart and about 2" high, but this can vary widely based on individual taste.

The basic stepping stone path consists of stones set in a single file. If you install this kind of path, make sure they are large enough for a person’s foot (not too small!) and are smooth enough so one doesn’t trip. And, of course, the spacing of the stones should match your stride. Next, consider the area around the stones; you can place them in a field of reddish-brown mulch or you can place them singly in a light-colored crushed stone walk (as shown). The contrast of the gray stone with the crushed stone works well to attract the eye and show people where to step.
