Utilize Closed Questions

It would seem obvious to say that asking questions before making assumptions is the best way to avoid misunderstanding and frustration for both the teacher and paraprofessional; however, in the world of education, where decisions are often made in a moment’s notice, basic communication often gets missed. Although it is a better idea to ask questions that will create the framework for thoughtful discussion, there are times when asking simple “yes” or “no” questions is appropriate and necessary.

Gaining quick answers to questions can bring insight to the teacher with regard to how best to work with the paraprofessional (Stockall, 2014). This requires little analysis on the teacher’s part, while gauging the effectiveness of the working relationship with the paraprofessional. Simply asking the paraprofessional whether or not he or she has had training in a specific area, for example, is much more effective than delegating a task to him or her for which there has been no preparation. Asking the questions ahead of time can save both teacher and paraprofessional from unnecessary stress in the future.
