The attempts to defray the conflict probably exacerbated it. Judging that Cuzco was too far inland to serve as the Spanish capital, Pizarro founded and settled in the new city of Lima on a stretch of coast under his own control, which would assure his own importance and give him easier access to supplies and reinforcements from Panama. Meanwhile, Almagro set out on an expedition to conquer the territories to the south, obviously hoping to find territories even wealthier than the Inca heartland. He and his men were not prepared for the arid wasteland of the Atacama Desert that stretches between Peru and what is now Chile, and their two-year expedition brought much suffering and death to the Spaniards themselves and the natives they met, with no new wealth to show for it.
