Tickseed is just another common name for various coreopsis, a large and varied group with many great garden plants. Most have 1–2 in. wide bright flowers in the yellow range, often with maroon marking; many are short-lived perennials in the warm South. They are worth growing anyway. Hairy tickseed (Coreopsis pubescens) is best represented by the compact, dazzling superstar ‘Sunshine Superman’. In its first year in a sunny, well-drained site, it can literally bloom all summer into fall if provided supplemental water. Tall coreopsis (C. tripteris) grows to 8 ft. or more, forming a large, spreading clump with many gray-green, 3-parted leaves and huge clusters of 2–3 in. wide flowers in midsummer. For that roomy spot in the sunny garden, its larger-than-life size is excellent. ‘Gold Standard’ tall coreopsis is a little shorter and long lived.
