14:2abl The white teeth (cf. Gen. 49:12), here compared to sheep, stand in sharp contrast to the black goats. The words of Cant. 4:2 show up again in 6:6, except there the "sheep prepared for shearing" are replaced by "ewes." The sheep are washed before shearing to produce the proverbial "white wool" (Isa. 1:18; Ps. 147:16; Dan. 7:9).2

Separating the black rams from the white sheep apparently happens first in Ezek. 34:17-22 rather than in Matt. 25:32-33. This seemingly conventional contrast is the intention of Cant. 4:2. Although goats (rams) are known as wild and impudent, sheep, especially ewes silently accepting shearing, are a symbol of meekness (Isa. 53:7). In contrast to the goats flowing down the mountainside, the gleaming white sheep coming up from the watering hole all in a row resemble a festal procession (see the commentary on 3:6a). In fact, sheepshearing was celebrated as a festival (2 Sam. 13:23; 1 Sam. 25:4ff.).
