San Francisco’s elite Town and Country Club, managed to buy their own clubhouses.

Jane Cunningham Croly, among the pioneers of the women’s club movement, sought to bring shared wisdom to clubs across the country by founding the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1890. Local branches of the GFWC appealed particularly to high school and college graduates, who would meet to discuss literature, the arts, and issues of social reform, such as the establishment of kindergartens, care for the elderly, and public health facilities. In clubs like the Women’s Municipal Leagues of Boston and New York, women with similar concerns found one another and worked together on progressive causes, which often led to long-term alliances and intimate friendships.

The history of the Chicago Woman’s Club is illustrative. After an initial period from 1876 to 1883 when members gathered together to discuss books and “suitable” topics (women’s suffrage was not one of them!) , the group debated on December 5, 1883: “Shall Our Club Do Practical Work?” The vote was affirmative, and members banded together to provide the money, materials, and teacher for a pioneer kindergarten. Then, in the late 1890s, the club took the lead in forming what was known as the Vacation Schools Committee, which garnered the assistance of sixty different women’s organizations to give city children a summertime experience in the country.

Yet however progressive, these women did not extend club membership or friendship possibilities to nonwhite women. African American women, rebuffed in their efforts to join established
