“Rosalind!” whispered Isabella. “Look at those birds.”

Rosalind followed her gaze. Two crows were sitting together on a tree branch. One flapped its wings and flew away. The other turned its black head as if it was eyeing something on the ground. It opened its beak and cawed loudly.

“Do you think the thieves have disturbed them, like The Book of Ninja says?” said Isabella.

“Maybe.” Rosalind stared over at the bushes underneath the tree where the crow perched. “We could be really close. We’d better not move, in case they see us.”

The princesses crouched down for several minutes. Rosalind’s heart thumped so loud she was sure the men would hear it. A prickly bramble scratched her arm and she shifted uncomfortably.

“Do you really think the men are over there?” hissed Isabella.

“I don’t know.” Rosalind opened The Book of Ninja again. She stared at the page on finding an enemy in a forest. The last sentence stood out: A cry of “fire” or the howl of a wolf may flush them from their hiding place.

It was time to use that advice. She took a deep breath and cupped her hands around her mouth, letting out a long and eerie wolf howl.
