Seeing God Face-to-Face

What I realized is that whenever we have the urge to pray, our Beloved is following us, intensifying our longing. And when, by his special grace, we plainly gaze upon him, beholding nothing but him, we are following him, and he draws us to him with the power of love. I clearly saw and fully felt that his wondrous and abundant goodness completes us and strengthens all our abilities.

Then I perceived that his continual working in every kind of thing is so beautifully done—so wise and so powerful—that it surpasses our greatest imagination. God's goodness transcends all thought, all comprehension. At that point, all we can do is contemplate him and rejoice. We allow ourselves to be filled with the overwhelming desire for oneing with our Beloved, to listen deeply for his call. We delight in his goodness and revel in his love.

And so, through his sweet grace, in our own humble and unceasing prayer, we will come to him now, in this life. If we are simple enough to bear his many secret touches and sweet spiritual glimpses, he will give us the oneing we desire. It is through the grace of the Holy Spirit that this shall be done. We will long for our Beloved until the day we die. And on that day we will merge with our Beloved, knowing ourselves clearly and possessing God completely. We will be endlessly hidden in God, seeing him truly and touching him fully, spiritually hearing him, deliciously smelling him, and sweetly tasting him.

Ultimately we shall see God face-to-face, and he will be completely familiar when we meet him. Then the created creature shall fully behold God her Creator and eternally contemplate him. No one can see God in this way and survive—not in mortal form. Yet when, in his special grace, he wishes to show himself to us here on earth, he strengthens the creature beyond her own natural power, and he measures out the revelation according to his own will, so that she can handle it and it does her the most good.
