Bringing Politics In

When it comes to their personal lives, a key distinguishing feature of Trump venerators is their focus on security, not authority. Now it is time to move beyond the personal level to the political issues that are important to Trump venerators and the policies they most want enacted.

I gave respondents a list of nineteen issues and asked them to rank the four that were most important to them.19 Table 6.4 contains the responses of the four groups. The most important issues for self-identified liberals are, in order, “racial justice, “health care,” “women’s rights,” and “income inequality.” There could be no better description of a group of people primarily concerned with the welfare of outsiders; that is, those who are not powerful, those who have traditionally been oppressed (women and racial minorities), and those who need better health care and higher incomes. Self-identified moderates list many of the same concerns though economic health makes an appearance on their list.20 Like moderates, non-Trump-venerating conservatives list health care and economic health but instead of racial justice and income inequality they list national defense/security and immigration. Moving on to Trump venerators, unlike non-Trump-venerating conservatives, health care and economic health are not in their top four but guns and law and order are. In fact, just as liberals’ list perfectly embodies caring for outsiders (racial minorities, women, people who are economically vulnerable) and concerns about insider power, Trump venerators’ list perfectly captures concerns directed at outsider threats and preservation of insiders: immigration, national security, guns, and law and order.

By taking note of the average rankings of each group, it is possible to observe the issues for which differences in priorities are statistically significant. When this is done (results not shown), of the nineteen possible issues, Trump venerators had significantly different priorities from non-Trump-venerating conservatives on only four: Trump venerators assess health care and women’s rights as significantly less important and law and order and guns as significantly more important.
