* Though we are quick to believe that internal candidates always get the job, according to science blogger Jeremy Fox, it’s actually quite rare (https://dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2017/09/23/hardly-any-ecology-faculty-positions-are-filled-by-internal-candidates-and-you-cant-reliably-identify-the-ones-that-will-be/).

* My dog Eleanor is an enthusiastic poop-eater. I think it is disgusting and embarrassing. But when she’s refusing to come in from the backyard because she’s busy chowing down on feces left by my other dog, I tell myself that she’s just getting the gut microbes necessary to keep her healthy.

* I have no idea where the elephant skull came from, but it was probably from the biology teaching lab.

* The best part of this visit to the zoo was that we got to meet with the vet behind the scenes in the keeper’s area. While we were there, some of the other staff were trying to examine a penguin. The very cranky penguin did not want to get on the scale.

* This finding is one example of a long-held belief being ultimately confirmed. Kevin Theis and his collaborators published a number of studies that found no placental microbiome in mice, rhesus macaques, or humans.
