CHAPTER FIVE
What they Leave Behind
As we touched on in the first chapter of this book, red foxes can be found living in so many different parts of the world. From Europe and parts of America, to Australia and even the Falkland Islands, this species of fox is incredibly widespread.
They make their homes in habitats that offer a range of vegetation types, such as tilled fields or grasslands, along the edges of forests, and nearby to marshes. With that said, they are animals that have the ability to adapt to all sorts of scenarios and have been found living in environments ranging from arid desert land to the Arctic tundra. Depending on the quality of their habitat, their home ranges can be between fiveâ13km2 in good areas or between 20â50km2 if found living in a poorer area in which they need to travel further afield to find everything they need to survive.
Each habitat range tends to be occupied by one adult male and either one or two females, as well as their offspring. At certain times of the year, for example in the winter when food is scarce, these ranges may overlap slightly but they will be fiercely defended by its owners. Typically, these animals will stay within the same home range for their entire lives. Some settle as close to their place of birth as 10km, whereas others will move as far as 400km away.
As with any animal, you donât necessarily have to see the creature to be able to confirm that itâs been there. Thankfully, there are lots of signs to look out for when hoping to catch a glimpse of these mysterious mammals.
