Hours later, Carrie glanced up at the clock and realized it was nearly four in the afternoon. She was so grateful that things had settled down and the team of firefighters had put out several of the blazes in the area. The volcano had erupted, but the event hadn’t been as traumatic as what she’d anticipated… and while that was good?

It was also extremely bad because she would still be dealing with facing her employer, Dr. Ebert, and her actions.

Stealing the van.

Plus, she’d undermined him – going to the news.

She could only imagine how nasty the voicemails were from him and had ignored each call repeatedly. If they were going to have her arrested – they could just take her from the police station where she was helping.

The irony of it all would not be lost on her!

Walking outside, she winced at the strangely muted glow of the sun from the heavy clouds above and was glad to see that the ash had stopped falling a few hours ago. There was a grimy coating everywhere, making it look like there had been a filthy snowfall of epic proportions out here, on this tropical island.

People were being checked by emergency medical technicians and paramedics, talking with police officers, and other first responder personnel were coming forward to help give out items needed that were donated by a grocery store nearby.

Glancing up, she saw Hades – or what looked like him – sitting on the top step of a church across the street, watching her. The keenly smart, dark, intelligent eyes seemed to call her. His dark coat was eerily light colored because of the ash that was coating him, clinging to every bit of fur.

Maybe this was all a surreal weird dream, and she was hallucinating? After all, she was beyond exhausted, and they were dealing with the aftermath of what had happened… perhaps this was her mind’s way of coping?

She hadn’t even realized that there was a church there because she’d been in the middle of this mess just like everyone else, too busy to blink, much less sight to see what was nearby. Walking across the strangely empty road, she saw it was indeed Hades, and he immediately licked her hand, whining slightly.

“Where’s your friend, buddy…” she whispered, kneeling to pet the animal and ruffled his ears. “You are such a sweet boy, aren’t you?”

Glancing up at the door, she hesitated, realizing that Paul was probably inside. Pushing the door farther open, Hades slipped inside before she could say anything.

She was being led... and the sight before her was not what she expected.

The police officer was cold, blunt, businesslike… and she’d only seen a glimpse of his inner self when he asked her out for coffee.

The dim glow of the church from the sun highlighting the stained-glass windows was almost cold. Normally it would have shone through brightly, giving a warmth to the room… but with the clouds blocking the sun, it was like heaven was trying to hang on with all its might, shining desperately for someone in need.
