Check out the olinguito’s

claws. They’re perfect

for climbing tall trees.

In June 2006, Miguel went to Ecuador. He visited several forests but

found the trails very rugged—too difficult for an expedition team hauling

scientific equipment to travel. Then he visited the Otonga Cloud Forest

Reserve. He had helped with fieldwork there during high school, and he

knew the reserve caretaker. Miguel talked to him about what animals

he’d seen in the reserve.

The caretaker reported seeing kinkajous, olingos, and owl monkeys. He

didn’t recall seeing anything that fit the olinguito’s description. But the

caretaker also told him, “Who knows what else moves around in the

treetops at night? If you aim a light there, you only see shining eyes.”

In the light of the camera flash,

an olingo’s eyes shine against

the dark branches at night.
