Ringo and Maureen made themselves scarce after only ten days, tormented by insects, loathing the food and missing the kids. Paul and Jane managed five weeks before throwing in the tauliy-a. John and Cynthia, George, Pattie and party would have sat it out for the full three months, but for a blow-up, after Maharishi was accused of making sexual advances towards some of the girls, including Mia Farrow. Magic Alex may have had something to do with the allegation. Mia herself has never said much, beyond a fleeting, non-committal mention in her 1997 memoir What Falls Away.

Scales fell from Beatle eyes. The rest of them flounced out on 12 April. It was left to John, as resident mouthy git, to inform their guru that they were off: ‘If you’re so fucking cosmic, you’ll know why,’ was his parting shot.6

Typical John, he then dashed off an angry little ditty about him, which he was forced to tone down and retitle from ‘Maharishi’ to ‘Sexie Sadie’ to ensure its place on the ‘White Album’. Tossing the guru and his teachings aside, they returned to London, went public with a statement that their association with him was over and that it had all been a mistake, and turned instead to the business of taking control of their troubled empire. They conveniently forgot that Maharishi had done them a massive favour by weaning them off LSD. Although less than a year later, John was on heroin.

The guru’s reputation was damaged by the scandal, for which no evidence was ever brought. Nearly thirty years later, George and Paul apologised unreservedly to him, and all were reconciled. Transcendental Meditation continued to thrive throughout the world, attracting millions of converts, and is practised to this day. Mahesh moved to the Netherlands, where Paul and his daughter Stella visited him in 2007. The following year, aged ninety, the old guru called it a day. Magic Alex, his alleged accuser, died ten years after.
