Q: How can I get quotes from reviews on the Amazon.com page for my book, and what does my Amazon ranking really mean?

A: Good that you’re thinking about this. When shopping on Amazon, people do read these quotes. So it is important to post them—and promptly. Your publicist can submit the quotes for you, and you can help her out by typing them up and emailing them to her. Keep in mind that there’s a twenty-word maximum per quote, and that you need to include the name of the publication and the date the coverage appeared. Expect it to take two to three weeks for the quotes to post once submitted. You can find out more about the quotes process at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/catalog-guide/guide/-/422230/103-5296917-1372617.

As for the rankings, when there’s a major jump, it’s a good indication that some big media has hit and been effective. But it’s not indicative of the number of copies you’ve actually sold. Here’s how Amazon explains it on their Web site (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/catalog-guide/guide/-/406132/103-5296917-1372617): “As an added service for customers, authors, and publishers, we want to show how items in our catalog are selling in relation to one another. This bestseller list is much like the New York Times bestseller list, except instead of listing just the top 50 or so titles, it lists more than two million! The lower the number, the higher the popularity for that particular title in comparison to other items listed. The calculation for a book’s sales rank is based on Amazon.com sales and is updated regularly. The top 10,000 best sellers are updated each hour to reflect sales over the preceding twenty-four hours. The next 100,000 are updated daily. The rest of the list is updated weekly, based on several different factors.”

Keep in mind that Amazon is not the authoritative resource for how your book is doing saleswise. It’s just one of many accounts. For certain books (health titles because many people prefer to shop for them in their privacy of their home; technology titles because their Web-savvy readers tend to make their purchases online), it’s a key one to be sure. But for other types of books, it’s simply not as crucial.
