Mayne's approach was matched by that of Brigadier M.M. Calvert, who took over the SAS Brigade after Brigadier R.W. McLeod in March 1945. 'Mike' Calvert came with an outstanding record from the Chindits in Burma. Hislop relates one story:

‘Shortly after VE day he [Calvert] was chatting to Jakie [J.J. Astor] and me when he announced enthusiastically: “Now for the Far East and a bit of action! I remember one splendid scrap we had when I was in Wingate's crowd; we ran into a bunch of Japs in a clearing in the jungle and there we were, hacking at each other with knives, swords, bayonets and the lot, just like and old-time battle”.’
