THE NEXT MORNING, WE broke camp. To my surprise, Preston actually helped. He packed up the gear and secured it to the mules with none of us asking him to. It was nice. I only hoped it would last.

As we wound down into the canyon, Jack worked on a map. Rosie adjusted well to her unusual riding style as she worked.

Once we were at the bottom, I pulled Outlaw to a stop.

“There’s another option for the train’s descent since that was too steep for them.”

“Show me,” she said.

Holt and Charlie came with us as we headed northwest along the canyon floor.

“I thought that spot there.”

Jack nodded. “I can see it. Want to take some readings?”

“Yeah, we can camp here and start clearing the brush for the line today.”

We made good progress until the sun dipped low in the sky. The days grew shorter and colder since it was the second week of December. Less light during the day meant it would take us more days to complete the job.

After we finished measuring the entry point, we measured the canyon floor the next day. Then we broke camp and moved further into the canyon.

“Do you think the river floods during rainstorms?” Jack asked.

“Probably. Picture water as it runs off the side of the canyon. This might not be a viable alternate.”

“That’s what I was thinking.”

The next morning, I rose early. Jaclyn slept, so I carefully slid out of the tent. I hiked up to the south rim of the canyon in the chilly winter air. Not a cloud dotted the sky as the sun rose in the east. Streaks of purples, blues, pinks, and oranges blazed across the sky. I breathed deeply of the crisp air as I sat down and hung my feet over the edge of the rim.

Lord, thank you for Jaclyn. Thank you for honoring our vows and softening her heart to love me so quickly. Thank you for making her a perfect helpmate. Show us how she can fulfill her dreams as a surveyor in our marriage.

As I watched our camp from my vantage point, Jaclyn emerged from our tent and looked around. She looked at the north rim and then the south. When she looked my direction, I waved to her. She waved back before she crossed the river by balancing on rocks. Then she headed up the same path I took to the south rim. A few minutes later, she joined me.

“I will never tire of mornings like this,” she whispered. “There is nothing like being out in God’s creation and watching it wake up under His magnificently painted sky.”

I placed my arm around her and drew her to my side. We sat there with our feet dangling over the edge until the rest of the camp woke. Then, reluctantly I led her back down to the river bottom.

After a few more days, we were ready to make a recommendation. It took us a week to make it back to Ash Fork since we stopped for more measurements.
