Nineteen

CLAYTON WAS BACK AT THE RANCH Friday evening, having left Helena shortly after noon. He’d had dinner with Nancy the night before, at a roadhouse ten miles east of the city on the old turnpike. Nancy was twenty-two years old and Clayton, after feeling her out for a time over oysters and wine, finally got around to asking what he would have to do to win the vote of people of her generation come October.

“But you are not up for re-election this October,” Nancy had said.

“Call it a hypothetical question.”

“We could do that,” Nancy said smiling. “And since we’re speaking in hypotheticals, why not go all the way and suggest that you could be running for governor this fall?”

“Let’s do that,” Clayton replied.

“At what point would we stop pretending?”

“I suppose now would be as good a time as any,” Clayton said.

Nancy smiled again, pleased with both of them. “You would have no problem in that area,” she said. “You’re the youngest one out there and you look even younger than you are.” She paused. “How old are you anyway?

“I will turn fifty next winter.”

“You hold your years well, Senator,” she told him. “Like I said, you’re the youngest one out there. All you would need to do is get out the vote. Using your considerable charms.”

Clayton was used to her flirtatious manner by now. He put it aside, at least for the time being. “And how do I do that?” he asked. “Young people are notorious for avoiding the voting booths.”

“The best way would be to make me your campaign manager,” Nancy said.

“You’re a woman.”

“Thank you for noticing.”

Clayton smiled. “You don’t even have a vote.”

“That’s something else we need to talk about,” Nancy said. “But at another time. First we need to put you in the governor’s mansion. I suppose it would cause a stir if you had a woman running your campaign. But you could name someone else and make me your behind the scenes campaign manager. I would report to you and you only.”

“Why would you want to do that?”

“Because I would like to help you become governor,” she said simply.
