When Students Don’t Listen or Seem to Ignore You

Good listening is a skill that needs to be learned, so have your students practice it. Give them a discussion topic, have them pair up, and ask each student to paraphrase what her partner says. The speaker has to feel that the listener understands her before the two can switch roles.

Some students expect adults to endlessly repeat things. Let your students know early on that you will rarely repeat directions. When you do give directions or express your expectations, ask a reliable student to summarize what you’ve said. Then, have students pair up and paraphrase your words to each other before continuing. If confusion persists, tell students that they need to ask at least three other students for clarification before asking you.

If you have asked a student to behave better and he doesn’t respond appropriately, try saying something along these lines:

Brad, I asked you to [identify the proper behavior] and you haven’t yet. Did you not hear me, or are you choosing to continue breaking the rules? I hope you just didn’t hear me and you will now do the right thing. Thanks.
