The lines at the grocery store had been longer than Jody had expected, but she was finally on her way back home. Conner had been nice enough to text her a few minutes ago to let her know that they were out back enjoying cold drinks and apple slices dipped in peanut butter. He was going to spoil Mia, but it wasn’t as if she wasn’t guilty of doing a little of that herself.

The two-lane highway was clear of traffic, so Jody was making good time on her way back to their neighborhood. After retrieving Mia from Conner’s house, she’d see if she could coax her into taking a nap. If she was successful, she might also stretch out and doze for a while.

Afterward, she’d put together a casserole for their dinner. Maybe inviting Conner and Mutt to join them would be a nice way to thank him for entertaining Mia. With that in mind, she’d also stopped at the local bakery to pick up one of their fresh-baked pies.

The sound of a revving engine broke through her train of thought. Glancing into the rearview mirror, she spotted a huge SUV coming up behind her at an alarming speed and closing fast. She pumped her brakes twice to flash the lights, hoping the driver would realize that he or she was exceeding the posted speed limit. Her warning had no effect. What were they thinking? If they wanted to pass her, now wasn’t the time. Three cars had just appeared from around the corner ahead in the oncoming lane.

Jody gripped the steering wheel with all her strength, as if that would give her some control over the dangerous situation. What she needed was an escape route, but the shoulder was narrow before dropping off into a drainage ditch. She might have to chance it, though, if the reckless driver didn’t slow down in a hurry.

Seeing the grille of the SUV up close and personal in her rearview mirror was beyond scary. At the last second, she spotted what looked like a dirt road coming up fast on her right. Taking a deep breath, she hit the brakes and jerked the steering wheel to the right to turn down the slight slope. She was vaguely aware of the SUV as it whizzed past, barely missing the back of her car in the process. It took all Jody’s focus to keep her own vehicle under control as it bounced along on the badly rutted surface of the narrow road.

And when Jody’s car finally rolled to a stop, all she could do was sit there and shake.
