In the predawn hours of June 7, 1998, James Byrd, Jr., a black man, was murdered in the small town of Jasper, Texas.

First, Byrd was beat up. Then, he was chained to the back of an old pickup truck and dragged down a country road for nearly three miles. When the sun came up that day, pieces of Byrd’s body were found scattered along the roadway.

Although the Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist groups denied involvement in the lynching, a cigarette lighter with the Klan’s insignia was found in the area. In addition, one young man who was convicted of murdering Byrd in February 1999 was a member of a white supremacist organization.

Thus, in spite of the efforts of the Radical Republicans in the 1860s and 1870s, racial prejudice still survives. However, during the years of Radical Reconstruction, many brave people, both black and white, worked diligently to assist blacks on the rough road to equality. Did they make any progress at all?
