Pieced backgrounds from Tick Tock on the design wall

Starting with the first block, trace and cut out the appliqué pieces. Begin with whatever piece seems like the most obvious choice to you. Add the 3/16˝ turn-under allowance and cut carefully so that if the piece remains in the quilt, you can use it.

Work through the quilt until all of the appliqué pieces are on the wall. Place sashing strips, borders—everything that is part of that quilt—on the wall.

Are you done? Take a giant step back and really look at it. Take a photo and study it. Begin stitching the appliqué only when you are happy with all of your fabric choices.

practical advice

In the real world, leaves are most often green. When you color an appliqué block, leaves can be any color, but because we are so used to green leaves, green works with just about any floral appliqué design. In fact, green often helps a design with leaves.

Even though the Tick Tock backgrounds are green, the grass-green leaves add a lively spark to this quilt.
