“Please pass the Special Chicken,” said Lizzie.

“My Special Chicken!” said the Bean, waving his fork around so bits of Special Chicken flew through the air.

“Uh-uh,” Mom told the Bean as she passed the container to Lizzie. “It’s your favorite, but remember? We all share.”

Dad had brought home takeout from China Star, a reward for all the work everyone had been doing on the essay contest. Lizzie figured that by dinnertime on Wednesday night, she had read over thirty essays. It was amazing how many people loved and wanted Gus.

Or maybe it wasn’t so surprising. Gus was pretty special. After a few days of having him around, Lizzie was almost as in love with Gus as Mom was. He was so cute, and so smart, and such a happy, sweet boy. Now she smiled down at him and rested her hand on his head. “You’re a good boy,” she told him. “You’re not even begging. Pretty unusual for a dog who’s part Lab.”

Gus gazed up at her and thumped his tail.
