Chapter Five

Calista

I backed away from him, slowly. It wasn’t just need and desire that had spilled over into me; it was a crushing weight of sadness, frustration, jealousy and love.

Alex watched me carefully. He knew exactly what I had felt just then, and I knew he was wondering what I would do with that knowledge. At that moment, I couldn’t do anything. I was aghast at all the emotions that had trampled my mind. I kept walking away from him until I got to the hallway and then I turned and fled to my room.

Tears coursed down my cheeks as I tried to sift through everything I had just felt. Of course I had known that Alex cared about me, but I had never known he loved me that much. I’d had no clue how much my actions to mate with Julian had affected him. It brought me to my knees by the side of my bed.

I stayed there for a long time, digesting everything, rethinking every moment of the last five years with Julian. What had I done?

If only Alex had shown me how much he cared about me back then. If he had come to me and told me he loved me, that he wanted me by his side, then I would have jumped at it. Instead, I was stupid and destroyed something that could have been incredible.

I stayed in my room for most of the night, afraid that if I went out to the living room, I’d throw myself at Alex and beg for his forgiveness. Not only for his forgiveness, but for him to break my bond with Julian and take me as his own. I was ashamed of feeling that way.

I lay on my bed, staring at the wall. I could never do that to Julian, to our family. I owed him too much. He had been a wonderful mate and father these last six years. I could not destroy him, or our family, that way.

It was early morning when I finally pulled myself off the bed. Anastasia would be up soon and off with Joan for the day. I shivered at the thought that Alex and I would be alone in the house again.

I heard the phone ring and a few moments later, a light rap on my door before it opened. Alex peered into the room, “Gina Marie is on the phone for you.”

I cleared my throat, “Thank you, I’ll take it in here, if you could just hang up the kitchen phone.”

He nodded and left. I picked up the phone, “Hello?”

“What the hell is Alex doing at your house?” Gina Marie practically screamed into my ear.

“Wait a second,” I replied and paused until I heard the extension being hung up. “He came down last night. He didn’t want Anastasia and me to be alone.”

“Why didn’t you call me and tell me that Alex was there?”

“I didn’t really think about it. It’s been kind of, um, strange.”

She barked out a laugh, “I bet it’s been more than strange.
