The Second Deportation (597 BC)

– 8 years after the 1st deportation / 2 Kgs 24:8-17; 2 Chr 36:9-10

(1) Time of deportation

– King of Judah: Accession year of Jehoiachin (ruled 3 months and 10 days; 2 Chr 36:9-10)

– King of Babylon: 8th year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar (2 Kgs 24:12)

(2) People who were deported

– At the turn of the year, King Nebuchadnezzar took King Jehoiachin captive to Babylon (2 Chr 36:10). He also took the king’s mother, his wives, his servants, and his officials (2 Kgs 24:12, 15; Ref Ezek 19:8-9).

– Prophet Ezekiel was taken captive (Ezek 1:1-2).

– The captains and all the mighty men of valor, ten thousand captives in all, seven thousand men of valor, all who are strong and fit for war, and one thousand craftsmen and smiths were also taken (2 Kgs 24:14, 16).

– None remained except the poorest people of the land (2 Kgs 24:14).

(3) Events surrounding the deportation

– King Nebuchadnezzar came to the city while his servants were besieging it. The king carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon the king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord (2 Kgs 24:10-13; 2 Chr 36:10).

– Then the king of Babylon made Jehoiachin’s uncle Mattaniah king in his place and changed his name to Zedekiah (2 Kgs 24:17; 2 Chr 36:10).
