The Egyptian spindle has an extra-long shaft and a small-diameter whorl for better stability at high speeds.

What’s best for you is the spindle with which you are currently comfortable, one that has a reasonably long shaft so you can wind on at a long angle, and one with some weight to it.

Tip: You’ll want to spin a fine flax yarn. The easiest to spin is a yarn the size of carpet thread. Fine yarns give you time to draft them and time to learn to manage the spindle. Remember that flax is very strong—you’ll have a difficult time breaking it between your hands—and it doesn’t need a lot of twist.
