The Importance of Taking Action
I have learned that the longer you wait the bigger price you pay if you fail to take action. You lose the respect of others in the building if you allow bad behavior to continue.
âBudd A. Dingwall, National Distinguished Principal, North Carolina
Once a principal has determined that a teacher has a problem, it does no good to wait to take action. Some school leaders, however, need to assure themselves that there is an issue by revisiting the situation several times before addressing it. They may go back to visit the classroom and observe lessons many times in order to be certain that their hunches are correct. Assured that there is a problem worthy of correction, a principal needs to gather up the courage to address the problem and determine how best to address it.
Waiting or failing to act will have several negative consequences. First, it will allow the teacherâs poor practices to become ingrained as habits. If the principal has seen the teacher in action several times and failed to intervene, or said nothing, the teacher may assume he or she is doing a good job. Others who observe the poor performance of the teacher and the lack of action on the part of the principal may start to believe that this level of performance is acceptable, or at least allowed in the school setting.
I have had one or two people that have said, âGosh that person is borderline.â If you think they are borderline, you should probably let them go. It is not really better for them [to continue as teachers], and in many cases it wonât work out.
âSanford E. Nelson, National Distinguished Principal, Minnesota
