Herald of winter
The herald of winter appears late fall and grows with pine across the cooler regions of the US and the UK. When the first frost appears the herald of winter begins producing its fruiting bodies.
Distinguishing features
• In damp weather the very slimy cap is golden brown with a gray or olive green hue. In dry weather the cap is dry and shiny.
• The sparse gills and the stipe shift in shades of yellow with orange hues.
• All parts of the fruiting body can have clearly marked red patches or streaks.
Preparing and preserving
Similarly to other slimy mushrooms, the herald of winter should not be picked when it is raining. It works well sautéed and can be mixed with other late fall mushrooms such as the trumpet chanterelle and the conifer tuft.
Look-alike mushrooms
It can hardly be confused with any inedible mushroom. A few closely related edible mushrooms that also taste good are the olive wax cap Hygróphorus olivaceoálbus, and Hygróphorus kórhonenii. However, they have white gills and the stipes have a dark, reticular pattern.
