Albright Knot

In saltwater fishing, you’ll often need to connect lines of different diameters; sometimes, the materials are different, such as when you join monofilament to fluorocarbon. You’ll find the Albright Knot most useful for joining these different lines, particularly when building leaders for big-game species (usually in saltwater fishing), or attaching a fly line to its backing.

1. Make a loop in the tag end of the heavier leader material, overlapping with the line with the tag end a couple inches. Pass the lighter material through this loop and pinch it against the heavier material. Give yourself a couple inches of material to work with.

2. Wrap the lighter material over the doubled section of heavier material, working toward the loop. You want about ten to twelve turns. (I recommend using twelve.) On the same side that you entered the loop, pass the lighter material back through the loop, as shown here.

3. Pull on the standing parts of the lighter material and the heavier material—pull steadily, don’t rush. Allow the coils to form toward the end of the loop. Pull the tag end of the lighter material to seat the coils. Next, pull steadily on the standing part of the lighter material, coaxing the coils to the end of the loop in the heavier material. Using pliers, pull the tag end of the lighter line, hard. Pull equally on the light standing line and heavy tag to secure the knot. Trim the tag ends.

Note: In the classic knot-tying book Practical Fishing Knots II, the authors Mark Sosin and Lefty Kreh recommend using a finishing knot to lock the tag end of the lighter line of the Albright in place, the same way you would lock the Bimini Twist (see steps 3 and 4 of the Bimini on page 82).
